Gallbladder Surgery

1. I have gallstones. Do I need surgery?
In general if you are having symptoms from your gallbladder then most likely you will
need surgery. If you have no symptoms then it is much less likely that you need surgery.

2 What is a typical gallbladder attack?
After eating especially something fatty, greasy or fried you experience upper abdominal pain. You may have nausea, vomiting or it may radiate into your back

3. If I need gallbladder surgery can it be done with a minimally invasive technique? A
laparoscopic or robotic technique will work very well in almost all cases.

4 What does it mean that I have a common bile duct stone? Sometimes a gallstone will get into another channel called the common bile duct. This is a major passageway for bile and a stone can block this channel and cause a lot of potential problems. This stone will need to be removed and sometimes takes place before, during or after the surgery. Often times it is performed by a gi doctor with an ERCP( endoscopic retrograde
cholangiopancreatography)

5. What is an expected recovery after gallbladder surgery?
Most patients are back at work within a week and full activities within three weeks

6. Are there any dietary restrictions after gallbladder removal?
There are no dietary restrictions. Of course a healthy diet and weight are to be encouraged.
